Use cases

Learn which geospatial use case fits your application.

Overview

A use case describes what you want from your geospatial data, independent of your industry. Knowing your use case helps you choose data with the right properties, such as resolution, revisit rate, or spectral bands.

Mapping and visualization

Choose this use case if you want true-color imagery that you can read directly for maps, visualizations, and presentations.

Typical data includes orthorectified optical imagery with red, green, and blue spectral bands.

Common applications include:

  • Farm portfolio mapping
  • Zoning mapping
  • Construction baseline mapping
  • Insurance portfolio screening
  • Logistics and recovery mapping
  • Food security mapping

Monitoring

Choose this use case if you want to compare repeated images of the same region to track its condition or change over time.

Typical data has a frequent revisit rate. For areas with frequent cloud coverage, consider SAR data.

Common applications include:

  • Pipeline encroachment monitoring
  • Offshore asset monitoring
  • Solar farm construction tracking
  • Port congestion monitoring
  • Maritime traffic monitoring
  • Border monitoring
  • Road and rail corridor monitoring
  • Flood and landslide monitoring
  • Infrastructure progress tracking
  • Traffic pattern analysis
  • Deforestation monitoring

Detection

Choose this use case if you want to find individual objects, such as vessels, vehicles, buildings, or trees, and know where they are, how large they are, or how many there are.

Typical data has a resolution high enough to make out individual objects. For SAR data, see SAR resolution.

Common applications include:

  • Vehicle counting
  • Vessel detection
  • Building footprint extraction
  • Tree counting
  • Illegal mining detection

Classification

Choose this use case if you want to sort objects, pixels, materials, or areas into categories.

Typical data includes multispectral or hyperspectral imagery, and SAR data with multiple polarizations.

Common applications include:

  • Land use mapping
  • Land cover mapping
  • Crop type mapping
  • Mineral mapping
  • Structural damage assessment

Measurement and modeling

Choose this use case if you want to measure physical or geometric values, such as temperature, gas concentration, elevation, area, or a 3D volume.

Typical data includes elevation models, stereo acquisitions, and thermal data.

Common applications include:

  • Ground motion measurement
  • Structural fatigue assessment
  • Urban heat mapping
  • Crop water stress mapping
  • Nitrogen mapping
  • Crop yield estimation
  • Water quality assessment
  • Harmful algal bloom tracking
  • Gas leak detection

Reference and validation

Choose this use case if you want trusted data to position, check, or add detail to your own data.

Typical data includes ground control points, space reference points, and parcel data. These products also help you check the positional accuracy of other data.

Common applications include:

  • Parcel and cadastral boundary lookup
  • Property ownership lookup
  • Tax assessment
  • Image orthorectification
  • Right-of-way validation
